     I didn't use a stud finder to install my niche, but when I mentioned that to my brother-in-law he showed me his.  I have to admit, it really makes finding your studs easy and essentially goof-proof.  Given how cheap and effective they are, I'm sure I'll pick one up the next time I have a project in mind.  For what it's worth, his (shown below) is about the size of a half liter bottle of water and is very easy to use.
